How To Change Your Home Central Air Filter

How to Change Your Air Filter

MERV-16-Filter-300x300The air filter in your central air system is a vital part of air conditioning and the first step to cleaning the air inside of your home. Many people do not realize that indoor air receives little opportunity for ventilation allowing airborne pathogens and particles to fester. It is common for indoor air quality to be less than what is available outdoors.

Proper air care includes AC maintenance. If you had your HVAC contractor maintain your central air not long ago but find the need to change the filter now, you can learn to do it yourself.

Importance of Regular Care for Air Filters

Air filters are the first line of defense in cleaning, passing air through the filter in the furnace for both heating and cooling. Stuffed and dirty filters can diminish the performance quality and energy efficiency of the central air system, cause it to overheat, overwork and lower indoor air quality.

What Do Central Air Filters Do?

The lifespan of filter service depends on the filter itself, ranging anywhere between one and six months. Aim to replace the filter at least two to three times a year.  Several types of basic filters and performance filters are available. You can speak with your HVAC contractor to determine the best fit for your home and central air system.

Change Your Air Filter for System Maintenance

To change or clean the air filter in the central air system, first ensure that the system is off. Locate the filter inside of the furnace (or air handler for electric systems).

To replace your air filter:

  • Have your new filter ready and confirm its correct size. An ill-fitting air filter will not work.
  • Carefully remove the old filter and avoid dropping dust collected in the old filter.
  • Wipe down the filter area and surrounding equipment surfaces with a cloth or paper towel.
  • Fit in the new filter by observing the direction of arrows printed on the filter and the air filter frame.

To clean your reusable air filter:

  • Remove the dirty filter.
  • Clean the filter frame and surrounding areas with a cloth or vacuum.
  • Rinse the filter using a hose.
  • Soak the filter intermittently or scrub with a solution of water and vinegar to eliminate bacteria build up.
  • Set the filter out to dry.
  • Reinsert the filter into the furnace once it is dry.

Please avoid running the central air system without an air filter as the system may draw the incorrect amount of airflow into the home, prompting damage.
