Troubleshooting Your Gas Furnace

Gas Furnace

The gas furnace can be a bit of a mystery. Mostly hidden out of sight, homeowners often forget about it until something goes wrong. Usually, these problems are not huge issues. Almost always, however, these small signs point toward some sort of decline.

Gas Furnace - Troubleshooting Your Gas Furnace

No Air Coming Through the Vents

The thermostat is on and you hear the gas furnace burning. Unfortunately, the house does not feel any warmer. What happened?

If you do not feel air blowing out of the air vents, it may be because the motors have stalled. There can be several reasons why:

  • Motors burned out
  • Obstruction tangled around the motor
  • Motors broke from age and use

Because motors are what pull and push air through the gas furnace system, it is important that all motors are in working condition. Otherwise, air gets stuck even though the actual gas furnace itself is working just fine.

Your gas furnace contractor will either mend or replace the motors.

Strange Smells

It is not unusual for homeowners to sniff their heated air and detect something off-color.  Because indoor air travels all throughout the house and the gas furnace system, it is exposed to several different elements.
These elements can include:

  • Construction dust
  • Pet hair and dander
  • Mildew
  • Microbiological growth
  • Yard waste
  • General buildup
  • Stagnant water
  • Stale attic air
  • Gasses, solvents and vapors

To solve this problem, first change the air filter.  It is a good idea to also schedule gas furnace maintenance with your preferred HVAC contractor. Your technician deep cleans the gas furnace, removing buildup so that the air in your home is cleaner to breathe.

Also, keep smelly objects away from the gas furnace and air vents. These objects include brooms and dustpans, cleaning supplies, paint and paint thinners, deodorizers, laundry and pet beds.

Funny Noises

Newer gas furnaces always start out quieter. As it ages, parts may degrade and stretch out, causing it to be louder when the heating and air conditioning runs. Generally, funny noises are not a serious concern.
Common causes include:

  • Debris lodged inside the system
  • Loose screws
  • Small broken pieces
  • Particle buildup

However, if the gas furnace system is continually loud and disturbing, it may be a larger issue that requires the attention of your gas furnace contractor.
Such issues include:

  • Separated parts
  • Broken motors and fans
  • Punctures and holes
  • Large obstruction
