Service Champions Walks for Autism Awareness for 3rd Consecutive Year

Service Champions Walks for Autism Awareness for 3rd Consecutive Year

About three years ago, the founder and president of Service Champions, Leland Smith, found out his great-nephew, Caleb, had been diagnosed with Autism Speaks 2012 (94) Croppedautism.

While the news initially came as a difficult surprise for Smith and his extended family, they soon learned that Caleb was not the only one in their family to be affected by the disorder.

Autism Is Increasingly Prevalent

In fact, Autism is more prevalent than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. And with 1 in every 110 children diagnosed with autism, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), it touches many other families within our company and community, as well.

The cause of autism is unknown, there is no cure, and it affects every person differently. So families with autistic member face a lot of uncertainty. Smith’s family was undoubtedly no different.

Support for Families Affected by Autism

Autism Speaks is the largest autism science and advocacy group in the United States. They hold Walk Now for Autism Speaks events in cities around the country that serve to both raise funds for autism research and promote awareness of the disorder.

To support Smith’s family and raise awareness for autism, a team from Service Champions first participated in Walk Now for Autism Speaks on November 13, 2010. The walk has now become a company tradition and a Service Champions Heating & Air Conditioning team participates each year.

This year, the Orange County Walk Now event was held at Great Park in Irvine. Our Service Champions Heating & Air Conditioning Team consisted of about 40 employees and their families and we walked with Team Caleb Albert (Smith’s great- nephew’s team).

A Commitment to Community

Autism is a disorder that hits close to home for many of our employees and community members. We understand that running a successful business is more than just providing great products and service and we are continually looking for ways, like Walk Now for Autism Speaks, to better our community.
